Neuronal plasticity as an evolutionary strategy: Implications for neuroprotection in response to hypoxic challenge

چکیده
1. Abstract Phenotypic plasticity has an important place in evolution because in order to survive in a dynamically changing environment, an organism needs to have a well-adapted set of defense responses, which include pre-emptive and retaliatory phenotypic shifts. From previous research it seems that while only a few vertebrates can survive prolonged periods of hypoxia or anoxia, the greatest physiological challenge occurs when severely diminished oxygen levels are encountered

Neuroprotection of a sesamin derivative, 1, 2-bis [(3-methoxy- phenyl) methyl] ethane-1, 2-dicaroxylic acid (MMEDA) against ischemic and hypoxic neuronal injury
Objective(s): Stroke may cause severe neuronal damage. The sesamin have been demonstrated to possess neuroprotection by its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. One sesamin derivative was artificially composited, 1, 2-bis [(3-methoxyphenyl) methyl] ethane-1, 2-dicaroxylic acid (MMEDA) had been developed to study its antioxidative activity and neuroprotection. Materials and Methods: The...
متن کاملUsing the endocannabinoid system as a neuroprotective strategy in perinatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injury
One of the most important causes of brain injury in the neonatal period is a perinatal hypoxic-ischemic event. This devastating condition can lead to long-term neurological deficits or even death. After hypoxic-ischemic brain injury, a variety of specific cellular mechanisms are set in motion, triggering cell damage and finally producing cell death. Effective therapeutic treatments against this...
متن کاملHigh neuronal/astroglial differentiation plasticity of adult rat hippocampal neural stem/progenitor cells in response to the effects of embryonic and adult cerebrospinal fluids
Hippocampal neural stem/progenitor cells (hipp-NS/PCs) of the adult mammalian brain are important sources of neuronal and gial cell production. In this study, the main goal is to investigate the plasticity of these cells in neuronal/astroglial differentiations. To this end, the differentiation of the hipp-NS/PCs isolated from 3-month-old Wistar rats was investigated in response to the embryonic...
متن کاملNeuronal response properties of somatosensory cortex (layer IV) are modulated following experience dependent plasticity in c-fiber depleted rats
Previous studies have shown that the receptive field properties, spontaneous activity and spatio-temporal interactions of low-threshold mechanical somatosensory cells in the barrel cortex are influenced by C-fibers. In this study, we examined the effect of C-fiber depletion on response properties of barrel cortex neurons following experience dependent plasticity. Methods: In this study, exte...
متن کاملBrain-derived neurotrophic factor protects rat cerebral cortical neurons from intermittent hypoxia in vitro
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays an important role in neuronal survival and growth and participates in neuronal plasticity. BDNF binds to its high affinity receptor TrkB and activates signal transduction cascades crucial for the production of cyclic adenosine mono phosphate (cAMP)-response element binding protein (CREB), which contributes to neurotrophin-mediated survival in the c...
